What Prognosis Is Recommended Post VP Shunt Carried Out Due To A Stroke?
My wife just had a stroke and because she was on blood thinners, the surgery to drain the blood occurred 2 days later. She has been in ICU for a month and all vitals are now stable but a VP Shunt was just done 4 days ago. She opens her eyes and slightly tracks movements or sounds. How much damage is done and what are the chances of recovery?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I need more information than what you're giving for the purpose of discussing what you are looking to understand. You could start with speaking with the neurologist taking care of her, if not her PMD. You could then, ask the neurosurgeons about things. Of course, being in the ICU for 1 month following a brain bleed is a long time but it is an encouraging sign that she opened her eyes and seems to be doing some tracking of objects both by sight and sound. That means that about 2/3 of the brainstem is probably intact. I cannot say what damage has been done to the brain without being able to examine her and examine the imaging studies and labs. However, again, opening the eyes and tracking is a very good sign in terms of prognosticating at least an acceptable neurological outcome.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
