What Quantity Of Urine Is Considered As Urinary Retention?

How much retain urine is considered urinary retention? I have been told that I should use catheters three times daily. My urine retention is approximately 150 milligrams on average. Does this seem like a high enough volume to warrant catheterization three times daily?

Hi,

If 150 ml is left after urge or accumulates between two catheterizations it may not be significant to warrant catherization as clinical distension of bladder or pain or stretch sensation can be used to determine need of catherization.

Otherwise if completely neurogenic element exist, after 6-8 hours one categorization may be done no matter if volume is very low to avoid recurrent urine infection and to determine renal output and renal function.

If persistantly low volumes are obtained may need, work up and intrvenous fluid replacement to avoid pre renal factors of renal compromise.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
