What Reduces Hearing Sensitivity Of The Ear?

Hi Doc, I have been having a problem with my right ear for a week now, it s like I feel a block in my ear and I cannot hear properly. I went to an E.N.T surgeon and he told me that I had a deviated septum in my nose and that I would need surgery as my hearing would further diminish, later in both ears, is this true? is there any other way I can handle this? please help

Hi,

Nasal problem like Deviated nasal septum might lead to Eustachian tube blockage.Eustachian tube is a tube which connects the middle ear with the nose and is responsible for equalization of middle ear pressure with the outside atmospheric pressure.

In case of the blockage of this tube, the middle ear pressure is not able to remain equal with the outside atmospheric pressure, resulting in negative middle ear pressure and in few cases fluid collection in the middle ear might occur due to which the feeling of ear blockage occurs as you are feeling. It would be advisable to do a hearing test called Pure tone Audiogram with Impedance. It will help to show that which type of hearing loss you are suffering from and how much reduced hearing and probable cause.

You might get relief by taking Oral decongestant(like containing Phenyl-ephrine) if you are not suffering from High blood pressure, Nasal Decongestant spray (like containing Xylometazoline) and Antihistaminic(like Cetrizine).

Also do steam inhalation. Avoid cold food and dust.If after following the above measures,if your symptoms are not improving, then it would be advisable to follow-up your ENT doctor and surgery might be needed to correct your nasal pathology.Hope this answers your question. Get well soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
