What Should I Do For A Bicep Injury With Pain And A Popping Sensation After Lifting Something Heavy?

Aloha. Today while helping a friend move 4 boxes containing her new desk when I lifted one corner of one box about one inch, I heard and felt a pop in the middle of my bicep and arm. Pain in bicep when I try to use bicep to pick up anything. Am icing bicep now and resting after taking 600 mg ibuprofen and rubbing a Hawaiian salve for torn or sprained muscles on the front of my arm from shoulder to elbow. What do I do now and when? Thank you.

Hello,

Your symptoms are indicative of bicep tendonitis as you are experiencing pain in the upper arm muscle down to your elbow. Keep the affected arm at rest otherwise you might hear a popping / snapping sound or feel a snapping sensation in your shoulder as well. Do not overwise the affected arm. Conservative measures like rest and ice are recommended. You can take oral analgesics for relieve from pain.

Physical therapy is helpful, corticosteroid injections into the bicep's tendon sheath may be advised if needed. If the condition persists, surgery may be necessary. Get clinically examined by a GP. Get required tests like ultrasonography done to visualize the overall tendon.

Then if required you may be asked to get done MRI or CT arthrography for detailed study of the injury and to rule out / detect bicep tendon rupture so that the treatment can be started at the earliest. You may be referred to an orthopedist if required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
