Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Should Be Done About A Red And Inflamed Primary Incision Scar On The Chest When The Heart Is Being Monitored?
My husband is 6 years post a successful mitral valve repair surgery which was performed through an incision between the right lower ribs. for the past 2 weeks he has been experiencing the same arhythmia, shortness of breath, dizziness and exhaustion which he had after the surgery. At that time he did cardiac rehab which remedied the symptoms and he has been fine until very recently. He is currently wearing a heart monitor to collect data which we hope will lead to the decision for another round of cardiac rehab. My MAIN concern is this: he just told me the primary incision scar is now red and inflamed and seems unwilling to call the doctors about this. What actions do you recommend re the inflammation?
The inflammation and redness in this region are concerning about a possible infection. I recommend consulting with his GP for a physical exam and some tests like a cardiac ultrasound, inflammation tests (complete blood count, PCR, ESR).
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
