What Should Be Done After Being Diagnosed With White Matter Brain Disease?

If you have been diagnosed with white matter brain disease, very early stage, is it better to increase the statin medication to reduce cholesterol (a risk factor for that disease) or is it better to reduce the statin medication because of its association with memory loss? It seems that the statin drugs go in both directions on this probelm. Thank you, Jeffrey Shapiro

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms and MRI brain findings.

Regarding white matter ischemic disease, the most important aspect of care is to keep the risk factors under control. This includes control of blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol.

Among medications, it is better to continue aspirin and statins to prevent disease progression.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Best wishes,
