It is indeed sad to know that you don't have access to good medical services in your region. If possible try to
consult a gastroenterologist outside Bolivia. If your child is gluten sensitive, then he might recommend you some tests like endoscopic
biopsy and blood tests to detect
gluten sensitivity. If his condition is improving when all wheat containing products are being withheld, then it might be due to gluten intolerance, that your child is having
diarrhoea. Gluten is not only present in wheat and wheat based products, but also in rye, barley (malted foods and drinks), and in contaminated oats also. You can give rice, and other cereals locally available other than those which I have mentioned above. If he is having improved appetite, with no abdominal symptoms by elimination of all gluten containing products, then you can continue to do so. If on introducing wheat or gluten containing foods, he has any symptoms, then it means he is certainly sensitive to gluten. If he is gluten sensitive, you will have to elimininate all gluten containing foods from his diet forever as there is no cure for this disease and can only be controlled through diet. On failure to do so, children with
celiac disease fail to
thrive and their growth is considerably hampered. So, its best to avoid such foods and seek advice of a specialist as soon as possible.
