What Should Be The Normal Value For Ferritin Level In Blood?

my son is the age of 18 and has been sick on and off the past year, now with just some recent blood work done. The doctor called me this morning letting me know that she wants him to see a hematologist his ferritin level is extremely high of 277. I am extremely concerned about this. Having level this high what could that mean, or what can it be signs of.

Hi!
welcome to HCM
Serum Ferritin 277 is a little high.normal ranges vary from lab to lab, also differ by gender, ethnicity and age. For 18 yr old range is 50-150 ng/mL range serum ferritin elevated at 277 ng/mL may suggest iron overload or it is may be indicating chronic inflammation as its an acute phase protein also.Any iron medications taken for long time may cause this or if there is some family history it may suggest haemachromatosis.A complete iron profile is suggested.
Hope this helps!Take care!
