Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
A friend has amyloidosis mainly affecting the heart. He has to go on a high dose of chemo or be dead in a few months. We found some ayurvedic medicine that would help cope with the chemo and will also break down the proteins. His conventional consultant does not want him to take this medicine because it is not proved and may affect the chemo. What do you think?
Hi welcome to HCM. Amyloidosis can cause deposition of degraded proteins in the extracellular regions of the heart.Ayurvedic medications are not effective to treat this disorder.I advice you to have a baseline ecg and screening 2 dimensional echo to assess the impact of amyloidosis on the cardiac output. If found low, drugs like inotropes particularly dobutamine will help.Monitoring of blood pressure will help to prevent the complications.Antihypertensive drugs will provide vital protection.Consult your cardiologist for further queries. Thank you.
