What To Do For Kidney Problem In Child?

At age 6, my son was in an MVA and as a result, his kidneys were damaged;his left kidney got lashed and shrank and is now 66% function-able and part of his right kidney was chipped off, healed now with a cyst, shrank and is now 34% function-able. The doctors said as long as it forms one cyst, more than likely, it will form multiple cysts. His apetite has been recently suppressed, he is losing weight, he complains of stomach pain while eating, his face sometimes swell slightly. They also said there is cause for concern some months ago but now they accuse me of overreacting even though there is no improvement shown. Do you think that there is cause for concern? Can you please give me some insight on what could and might happen in the long-term?

Hi,

For a clear picture on long term prognosis, we need more details- his blood pressure, urine output/day, values of serum creatinine, blood urea, sodium and potassium. Generally speaking, kidney injury following MVA does well on the long term if was caused direct trauma, but not good if it was caused by other related insults like myoglobinurea or prolonged shock. Kindly get back with details or discuss with your nephrologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
