What To Do For Negative Thinking And Anxiety?

I am 48, a professional woman and believe I am perimenopausal. I was laid off twice last year due to corporate pharmaceutical downsizing and my husband had a heart attack in May. I am constantly thinking everything is falling apart and the anxiety is ruining my life. I have lost the confidence I once had and constantly feel like I serve no purpose. I look forward to nothing and cry at the drop of a hat. The glass is always half empty, never half full. I know I am blessed logically, however I keep thinking we are going to lose everything we have worked for. I really believe I am going crazy!

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,
I read you query and can understand what you are going through. You are facing significant stressors and as such your feeling low can be explained. Going by what you have mentioned, you seem to be having symptoms suggestive of depression. I would suggest you to fix an appointment with a psychiatrist, sooner the better. Had I been your psychiatrist, I would have started you on anti-depressant (may be escitalopram or sertraline) and advised you to start exercising on a daily basis. Some supportive sessions where you could discuss your problems freely would be recommended too.
Wish you a speedy recovery. All the best.
