What To Do For Nose Blockage?

After many conultations with my GP, and trying all the available nasal spray medicines, my nose is still continuously blocked as it has been now for over 3 years. My GP says that my nasal passages are fine and that I just have to grin and bear it. Can you suggest anthing?

Hello,

To prevent suffering from nose blockage you should avoid food that may trigger it, like alcohol. Avoid alcohol, it is a diuretic and it will dehydrate your body causing thickening of the phlegm. Avoid milky porridge or cereals with milk as they make congestion worse. Rather have a toast with coffee. You can take almond or cashew milk.

To feel better take ginger tea, plenty of water, soups and warm beverage. Take citrus fruits to boost immunity against common cold and congestion. Take regular steam inhalation. It is very effective. Use a humidifier and avoid extremes of temperature. Avoid irritants that may trigger nasal blockage like car exhaust, allergy to pollen, smoke, tobacco, etc.

Medical condition that causes nose blockage is sinusitis (chronic sinusitis). You are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT. Get X-Ray PNS done. You may be asked for allergy testing, CT (to speculate the details of sinuses and nasal area). You can take antihistamines for relieve. Your treatment (with antibiotics, immuno-therapy or surgery) will depend on the pathology detected and your clinical condition.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
