What To Do For Uvula And Lack Of Gag Reflex?

Hi. I have a sore throat and hoarse voice. I went to a walk in clinic 2 days ago and they told me I had viral bronchitis. It has worsened over the past 48 hours and now I have noticed a deviated uvula and lack of gag reflex. Should I wait for the virus to clear or go back to the Doctor for a second opinion?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. It seems that your tonsils are swollen and they have pushed uvula on the other side.

If viral infection is diagnosed for your problem, then you do not need to go for a second opinion. Viral infections are not treated with medicines usually and they are given just supportive treatment until body's immunity takes over in 7-10 days and eliminates the infection.

Thus, if you are having pain right now, you can take analgesics such as Ibuprofen 400 mg or Ketorolac 10 mg up to three times a day. Have lots of fluids and take rest. Gargling with warm salt water will laso help to decrease the swelling of the tonsils.

If you do not find the situation going into remission phase after 5 days, then you should consult an ENT specialist for clinical examination and further investigations regarding your problem.
