Jaundice is a sign caused by liver disease- it means is a yellowing of the skin, conjunctiva and mucous membranes caused by increased levels of bilirubin in the human body. Jaundice can be due to 1)Pre hepatic Jaundice- excess break down of red blood cells- e.g. in malaria 2)Hepatic jaundice- because of liver disease- can be viral, alcohol abuse or liver damage due to drugs/medicine, 3)Post hepatic Jaundice- due to obstruction to the out flow of bile- e.g. because of a gall stone causing obstruction. The symptoms of each of these types will be different. If you do notice that you have Jaundice you need to see a doctor for a physical examination to find out the cause for your jaundice. If you have any further queries you can chat with our doctors online between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Indian Standard time.
