What To Do When You Inject 19 Un Of Novolog Instead Of 19 Un Levemir ?
What to do when you inject the short acting insulin at night instead of the long acting. My 14 year old son has Type 2 Diabetes . He accidentally injected 19 UN of Novolog instead of 19 UN of Levemir. He then ate 16 g. of carbs to try to counter act it. What should we do?
Hello.
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic forum.
Short acting insulin only controls the blood sugar levels upto two hours after taking the meals. The long acting insulin provides blood glucose control for upto 12 hours. If he has taken short acting insulin then he did right by taking carbohydrates after it.

Certainly imp. question. Short acting will control BSL upto 4 hrs, peaks at 2 hrs or so.. Keep a watch if after injecting patient has hypoglycemia aftr 2-2 1/2 hrly.
As it will not act as a bolus throughout night, fasting may be elevated. so, adjust meal and insulin dose of next day morning accordingly.
