What Type Of Treatment Is Recommended For Chronic Diarrhea?
Yes,hello. If a person has diarhea for almost two months should they give him an anitibiotic to see if it is an infection. He also has had a fever for a week now. And was dehydrated. He has been to the hospital twice now and they gave him an iv to rehydrate him, and morphine for pain and then sent him home to wait for a colonoscopy. do you suggest anything else?
Hello. I have gone through your question and understand your concern. Two month of diarrhea associated with fever and pain [as you mentioned being given morphine as a part of your treatment]. Diarrhea lasting more than 6 weeks is considered chronic and is less likely to be bacterial to be treated by antibiotics. Diagnostic evaluation is required in such cases along with a good patient history. As for now I would suggest colonoscopy as a “gold standard” for diagnosis of lower gastrointestinal pathology & best initial test to confirm diagnosis. Apart from colonoscopy check for any weight loss & stool examination for blood, fat, mucous, leukocytes passed in stool is also helpful. Good luck. Hope your concern is answered. Thank you.
