What Will Happen If A Mouth Sore Ointment Is Put In The Eyes Instead Of Eye Drops?

Hello Doctor:

I am completely embarassed to be asking this question, but I know I have to past my feeling so ridiculously stupid to have had this happen to me. Yesterday evening, I located a small tube of PM eye moisture gel that I was looking for the day before because I was experiencing dry eyes and my eye doctor had recommended this product to alleviate that problem for me. My mistake was that I placed the tube on my bedside night table with the intention of placing it into my eyes before I went to sleep last night. With the lights out, I squirted the ointment into my eye to soon very painfully realize that I grabbed a different tube and inserted it into my eye instead. I forgot that I had left a tube of campho-phenique for a mouth sore the night before last. To my horror both tube are shaped the same. Instantly my eye started to sting immensely. I ran to bathroom and started flushing my eye with cold water. My husband then retrieve my eye wash cup and started to flush my eye with my contact saline solution. At first, I couldn't see and had no tolerance to light, but then after many times of flushing my eye it began to hurt less and my vision steadied itself. This morning, it hurt in the corners of my eye, but my sight with my glasses seemed okay. I called for an eye appointment but the earliest I can get is Wednesday morning. I am concerned about waiting that long to see a professional. At this point in time, my eye feels different but I now have an off and on , dull pain deeper in my eye almost like it is behind my eye in the inner corner and above it., and an occasional "sleepy" forms in the corner of the eye as well. I used rewetting drops this morning but nothing since. Am I past the worst of it? Is it okay to wait until Wednesday to see a professional? Obviously, I am feeling foolish right now, but I don't make to make it worse if you believe a Wednesday appointment is too long to wait. I appreciate any of your expert advice you can provide. Thanks so much. Michele
