Whay Causes Bruising And Swelling On The Calf?

HI, I fell and got a deep bruise on my calf a week ago that swelled up quickly. It swelled a lot and I had an x-ray and they said it was just a bruise. The swelling was down the next day and it seemed to improve each day. Today it is getting puffy again. It is now red and hot to the touch. What should I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

A swollen, red and hot calf is always good to be checked by a doctor as soon as possible. This is to rule out deep vein thrombosis and cellulitis. Your doctor will examine you and might order a doppler ultrasound as well.

According to the finding, he will decide if you need antibiotics or you will need treatment for deep vein thrombosis.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
