Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
When Can One Take Gabapentin And Ambien After Alcohol Consumption?
I am taking gabapentin{900} mgs and ambien [10]mgs as prescribed by my doctor. I take them together at around 9:30 pm to fall asleep. I know you are not supposed to mix these drugs with alcohol. My question is, if I were to have a martini at around 5:30pm, 4 hours before I take my aforementioned prescription drugs, would that be a problem?
It's not advisable to take Gabapentin and Ambien after consuming alcohol. Taking alcohol along with Ambien and Gabapentin can increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, impaired thinking, judgment, and motor coordination which can result in falls and sometimes fatal injuries.
You should avoid the use of alcohol while being treated with these drugs. You should also avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you.
In view of the above, had you been my patient I would not advise you to take 'Martini' (a cocktail made with gin and vermouth, and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist) as you desired.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
