When Can Tooth Extraction Be Done After Stopping Alendronate?

I take alendronate weekly (70 mg.) and need to have a tooth extracted. How long must I be off the alendronate before I have this done? Also I take acyclovir as needed, will this interact adversely with the alendronate. I also take a calcium supplement with magnesium, zinc and vit. D. Is this what I should be doing? Thank you, Tish Josserand

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Well, Alendronate should be stopped atleast 3 months prior to the dental extraction or any other forms of dental surgery..

It is done to avoid complications post dental procedure that is Osteonecrosis that is common with Alendronate and other bisphosphonates..

So it is advisable to every patient who is due to take any form of bisphosphonate to undergo meticulous oral prophylaxis procedures so that you do not need dental treatments during the course of bisphosphonate therapy..

But in case if you need a tooth extraction, you should consult your Physician so that he can check your bone density and other investigations should be done before stopping alendronate dosage..

I would suggest you to please avoid tooth extraction till your body gets wean off alendronate so that you do not suffer side effects like Osteonecrosis that can be fatal..

The other mineral supplements that you are taking like calcium, magnesium etc should be continued..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
