Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
When Does One Regain Consciousness After Being On Midazolam And Fentanyl?
Patient had sever heart attack and had to be sedated because of tube ventilation. He was given midazolam (5 ml/hr) and fantynyl 70 microgram / hr. It s been 48 hrs since the sedation drugs have been turned but still he is not awake. What could be the reason?
Sedation caused by midazolam and fentanyl should be over by 48 hours of stopping. If still not awake, this probably suggests brain dysfunction from poor blood supply to brain during the attack. Sever attack can cause hypotension and shock which impairs blood supply to various organs. But we have to consider many other factors like age, other co-existing medical conditions, blood sugar and electrolyte values. Your doctor will discuss in more detail.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
