When Is The Best Time To Take Metoclopramide And FDgard For Gastroparesis?

I have just been diagnosed with Gastroporesis and the Dr gave me a script of metoclopramide which she told me to take before meals... it does not say how long before meals and she also gave me samples of restora but never told me when or how to take them and samples of FDgard again with no directions on how to take these... they just put them in a bag and gave them to me when I left.... the metoclopramide was called into the pharmacy so it says before meals.... but how long before meals??? I am confused....

Hi there,

I understand your frustration, and it is good that you are careful with your medication and supplements, because often the timing of medication makes a big difference in how effective it is.

Metoclopramide is meant to be taken on an empty stomach to give it time to work, which means ideally at least 30 minutes before meals. The FDgard is a little more flexible, either 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after meals. The Restora, which is a probiotic, is also meant to be taken on an empty stomach, to minimise the disturbance from the stomach acid. This means that it should be taken at least 30 minutes before meals as well, but I am not too sure about how it would interact with the FDgard.

Therefore, I would recommend that you take your metoclopramide and FDgard together 30 minutes before your meals, and leave Restora for bedtime since it is only once a day. The other option is to take the Restora and metoclopramide together before the meal, and leave the FDgard for after the meal. This is because metoclopramide is a lot less likely to interact with the probiotic than FDgard.

Tailor it according to your own habits, and don't worry if you are unable to wait the full 30 minutes each time before your meal. They will still help, just not as well as it would be if taken at the right time.

Hope this is helpful to you, please let me know if you have further questions.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
