Hello. If my primary care doc wrote my xanax which Ive been on for 12 years and then I get put in the hospital and another wrote me klonopins and unknowingly my mother filled the klonopins does that void out my xanax because I had 2 refills on the xanax?
Hi & Welcome. Incomplete data like age, gender, purpose of taking Xanax, etc?
Changing from Xanax to Klonopin will not cause any harmful effects, because Xanax (Alprazolam) and Klonopin (Clonazepam) both are benzodiazepines and have a common mechanism of action.
Either of these medications can be taken.
It is usually not advisable to take these drugs regularly for more than 4-6 weeks because these drugs can reduce their effectiveness over a period of time and have abuse potential.
Shifting to Klonopin will not have much benefit.
You can take the same dose of Klonopin but keep in mind that Klonopin has a much longer duration of action than Xanax in other words 1 mg of Klonopin would be roughly equal to 0.5 mg of Xanax.
Hope these answer your queries.
