Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I quit taking very high levels of narcotics a year ago this October 4. I did it at home without medical assistance or meds of any kind. The detox place the ins sent me to said my opiate levels were so high, fhey wanted me to tapper down at 1/3 of what I was taking before they could help. I went home and my wife helped me through this. It took 8 days and I lost about 30 lbs. Ever since then I get these dizzy and weak spells like my body is looking for something. I continue to lose weight and not trying, i am down to 172 lbs. 28 days ago I was 184. I force myself to eat, Not well, but I eat like a horse. any ideas onm whats up?
First of all I like to inform you that weaning from opioids is not known to cause weight loss to this degree. However it is possible that following use of opioids you had increased appetite and weight gain. The current weight loss could be back to homeostasis following stoppage of opiods.
The other possible reason could be thyroid problem and it occured during this time as a coincidence. I understand that we first blame opioids at this time but does not mean other things can not contribute during this time and we must look for most important disorders such as hyperthyroidism.
I hope this answers you. Thanks and regards.
