Why Am I Having Hot Flashes For Years?

I am 70 + and am still having hot flashes. I started them in my mid 40s and have not stopped except for a few years when I took premarin. I stopped that when medical studies warned of breast and ovary cancers. I have them maybe 5 times during the day and also at night. Any info would help.

Hot flashes are typically caused by hormonal imbalance. When a woman hits menopause and her body starts to make the transition, production of estrogen and progesterone is disrupted. This change causes the hypothalamus to think that the body needs cooling down so it sends signals to the rest of the body, which in turn causes a hot flash.
The most effective treatment for hot flashes is estrogen. Medications such as antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs also may help reduce hot flashes. For most women, hot flashes fade gradually within a few years.
