Why Are Lidocaine With Epinephrine Used When Caring For Wounds That Are To Be Sutured?

Good afternoon. I am to be teaching a class on the administration of lidocaine with and without epinephrine and then on suturing wounds. I was wondering, other than to lessen the bleed, why do we use lidocaine with epinephrine when caring for wounds that are to be sutured?

Hello and welcome to health care magic.
Epinephrine when injected locally will produce vasoconstriction - the blood vessels gets contracted especially the veins. So when combined with lignocaine, it reduces the absorption of lignocaine through the veins, so that the local anesthetic action will prolong for a longer time. Other wise lignocaine is short acting and it will be quickly absorbed through the veins and will be taken away from the site where we need the anesthesia. Additionally as lignicaine causes blood vessels to contract , it reduces the bleeding from the site and so suturing will be easy.
Hope this will be helpful to you.
Thank you.
