Why Breast Is Hurting With Redness Underneath Nipple Areolar Complex?

My left breast has been hurting all day. I am a 66-year old woman and I have had a shingles vaccination. I took my bra off and it still hurt. I just looked and there is a definite red area underneath my nipple areolar complex. When I apply cold it feels better, but when I take it off it hurts again. What is it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to mastitis which is an infection of the breast. I suggest using anti inflammatory medications such as Acetaminophen to relieve the pain. I also suggest warm compresses for local application. If the symptoms continue, I suggest to start a cycle of antibiotics to treat the infection.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
