Have you received any injection in that area recently. You could have strained your muscle due to excessive exercise or bad posture. You can apply pain killing ointment for relief. If not useful you can visit the Orthopaedician to rule out any injury or abscess.

Hi michael;
welcome to HealthcareMagic
If you have pain in back that is above the butt then it may be a muscle pain due to a sprain or even it can be due to compression of the nerve in your spine.Presently if the pain is not very severe and disturbing you just take a painkiller and see if the pain is reduced no reason to worry and if not please get examined by a doctor and then get treated.
Thanks
