Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
About 10 or 12 years ago I suddenly became zero tolerant for caffeine. I'm now 51 and been post menopause for 15 years or so if that matters. And as I get older, different things that contain any type of stimulant cause my heart to race. Wine, dark chocolate, even green tea has just enough caffeine to make my heart race. Is this serious and is there any kind of diagnosis for these symptoms?
After going through your medical details, I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that after menopause there is change in the hormone levels in the body which can make your heart flutter. In this case caffeine containing products can trigger the Palpitations as it increases epinephrine level in the body.
To avoid fluttering sensation or palpitations kindly follow the followings:
1. Avoid coffee, chocolate, soda, energy drinks, and other products that contain caffeine
2. Avoid spicy foods
3. Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and recreational drugs like cocaine
4. Avoid cold medicines containing the stimulant pseudoephedrine
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
