Why Does Chest And Throat Hurt When I Cough?

hi doctor; My husband started several months ago having problems with his eyes discharging white stuff he hasn t done anything about it since and it has continued. He has been using over the counter eye drops. He was diagnosed with sinusitus 3 years ago. He started complaining about a sore throat and trouble swallowing about 2 weeks ago and about 1 week ago his bottom teeth started to hurt. About two days ago he started complaining about a plugged nose and chest pain and is coughing alot and it really hurts his throat and chest when he coughs. From what I can tell on-line it sounds like his sinusitus is back and bad. He started taking sudafed yesterday morning so he s had 3 doses by now and he s taking his blood pressure several times a day like he always does and his pulse is around 100-106 and his blood pressure is from 160 over 90 s to 150 s-over 90 to 100. He just got a reading of also an irregular heartbeat. I m concerned that he should be talked into going to the emergency room (it s a sunday evening). He has coughing constantly and nothing is coming up and when he blows his nose nothing comes out, his chest hurts, his eyes are tearing and he s reddish in the face. He says he thinks his hears are getting plugged up also. He started a medicine he had here at home in case he needed it for another sinusitis attach called fluticasone propionate this morning. He takes vytorin for high cholestrol. Do you have any advice for us. Thank you,

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the detailed history about your husband having multiple problems about sinusitis, coughing, nasal black, chest and throat pain while coughing raised pulse rate and mild high blood pressure, taking medicines like Sudafed and so on.
Yes, it is better o see a Doctor at ER as per the history so that any additional medicines can be given considering so many problems that he needs symptomatic and supportive medications.
The basic problem needs to be diagnosed by consulting an ENT Surgeon for ENT Endoscopy, clinical evaluation and investigations:
Tests of blood for CBC, thyroid functions, diabetes and as required.
X-ray of the chest and sinuses to see the possible causes of symptoms.
CT scan if X-rays are suggestive of any collection, infection or so.
This will allow for the treatment of the causative factors too.
Symptomatic treatment with antihistamine, cough suppressants, anti-inflammatory with painkiller properties for pain in chest and throat.
Antibiotic cover if there is any evidence of an infection.
Nasal drops and steam inhalation.
All these will lead to a proper diagnosis, complications of diseases and get treated accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
