Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Why does metformin cause muscle pain? I am 55 and weigh 160 at 5'4" I was diagnosed with diabetes 1.75 years ago. Within a few months, I began experiencing tendinitis in my feet and left elbow. Now the pain has spread throughout my body. I do not take any other medications. I take vitamin D3, B12, alpha-lipoic acid, fish oil and other vitamins daily. I am a vegan.
I had never experienced body pains nor arthritis before I began taking Metformin. I believe it's causing this condition. It forced me to stop my daily exercise routine. I'd like to know what makes Metformin do this to the body?
Hi thanks for the query.diabetes s a multisystem metabolic disorder the symptoms which you are CURRENTLY experiening are partially because of the drug and the disease.diabetes particularly type2 is largely responsible for neuromuscular complications.metformin can contribute can contribute to this by causing lactic acidosis.this causes peripheral muscle weak.you rightly receiving vitB12 therapy whose defeciency is common in diabetics and vegetarians.,can result in spinal cord and nuromusular diseases.I suggest you switch over to another class of anti diabetic drugs to minimise muscle weakness.by consulting your diabetologist.thank you
