Why Does Neck Cramps Happen After Thyroid Removal ?
Hi, I had half of my thyroid removed in August and am having neck crams (charley horses). I have read a couple of posts from people with the same problem but no one knows why. Do you have any idea why this might happen to some people after thyroid surgery?
Hello, Thank you for using HCM! I am trying to give you some more information regarding to your concern. The 2 main side effect of the thyroid surgery (as your doctor may have informed) are the laryngeal nerve damage and the removal of the parathyroid gland, which are responsible for the production of parathormone. The parathormone is the hormone who maintains the calcium balance in our body. The removal of the parathyroid glands is associated with low calcium levels that is manifested with cramps and numbness. So If you were a patient in my clinic I would recommend you to do some exams in order to verify the cause of your symptoms. -Parathormone level -Calcium level. If they result to be low, than you should take calcium tablets. Hope the information Is helpful.
Kind regards,
