Why Does The Blood Pressure Level Suddenly Drop?

Hi I had a ct scan today, and experienced dizziness, nausea, hot sweat, and vision disturbance, following the insertion of the canula, prior to any contrast being given. I suffered a type a aortic dissection in January and have an occluded right corotid artery and diminished blood flow to the right side of my brain. I did not experience any stroke symptoms today. What could have caused the sudden drop in bp? Of not heat pads were put on both my arms for about to assist in finding a vein - would this have contributed?

Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your question.

This is a phenomenon called vagal syndrome. It tends to happen in frightening perceived procedures to the patients, and also from pressing of a neuro-vascular (nerve, artery, vein) area. It is caused by compensatory overstimulation of the parasympathetic (vagal) system and is characterized by: dropping in heart rate, blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, blurry vision, excessive sweating etc. There are cases that present without the bradicardia (dropping heart rate). Anyway, it is not an allergic reaction, and it is not at dangerous, if the proper treatment is immediately installed, with fluids and atropine.

I hope I was helpful. Take care.
