Why Experiencing Nightmares After Taking Donepezil For Memory Loss After Stroke?
JUST STARTING TAKING 10 MG. DONEPEZIL LAST WEEK, AS POSSIBLE HELP FOR SHORT TERM MEMORY AS A RESULT OF A STROKE 5 YEARS AGO. (SUGGESTED BY NEUROLOGIST, SAID HELPS SOME PEOPLE) I HAVE STRATED HAVING NIGHTMARES, AND LAST NIGHT IT SCARED AND AWAKENED ME AND I COULD NOT FALL ASLEEP AGAIN. THIS MORNING I AM QUESTIONING THE APPLICATION OF THIS MED. I HAVE NOT HAD NIGHTMARES BEFORE THAT I REMEMBER. I DO NOT HAVE ANY SIGNS OF ALZHEIMERS. ANY COMENTS?

Donepezil is known to cause very vivid dreams. If this happens with my patients, I ask them take Donepezil in the morning instead of at night. This usually helps.
I also put my patients on Donepezil 5 mg for a month before starting on a 10 mg dose. This reduces side effects.
Donepezil helps in Vascular dementia (caused by multiple strokes some of which may go unrecognized) as well as Alzheimer's dementia. However, if you think that you don't have signs of dementia, it will help to get a detailed cognitive workup to confirm dementia.
