Why Have I Been Having Severe Pain In My Lower Back Which Is More On The Left Side?

I have been having severe pain in my lower back, particularly on the left side. It feels like severe muscle spasms that go across my lower back and down my legs. This has been going on for nearly six weeks. Sometimes the spasms are so severe they almost cause my legs to collapse. I am 67 and enjoy generally good health.

Hello,

You are suffering from severe pain in your lower back that is more on the left side radiating to your legs. Your symptoms are indicative of developing sciatica, lumbar herniated disc, compression of sciatic nerve by piriformis muscle, inflammation of the arachnoid. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get all required tests and investigations done. You will be treated accordingly.

If sciatica is detected steroids are given orally or by shots to alleviate pain. Exercises, maintaining healthy weight may help. Surgery is recommended when symptoms start affecting your quality of life. Pain medication or physiotherapy and avoiding pain triggers such as certain sitting positions and strenuous physical activities are helpful.

Rest, hot and cold treatments, massage therapy will help to increase your mobility. Self-care, exercise, and proper posture will help to improve symptoms. You will feel better. You can also take muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatories to reduce pain and discomfort. Avoid sedentary lifestyle. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
