Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I sound raspy all the time. Especially when I am around smoke. Then I go to school and try to speak loud all day and my voice gets worse. I can t reach high pitches like I used to. All o the other teachers think something is wrong bc it is not normal to lose your voice every weekend.
The possible causes are allergy to smoke/pollutants; or, an inflammation / nodule of the vocal cord(s). Other features of allergy (such as, nasal/throat irritation/itching, watering and burning of eyes, dry cough, sneezing- if present, confirms the diagnosis of upper respiratory allergy.
Gargles with saline (4-6 tablespoons of salt in a glass of warm water) will help.
Consult an ENT doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, examine your throat and vocal cords, and- based on the findings- will prescribe suitable/modified treatment.
If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
