Why Have Symptoms Such As Sinus Pressure, Stuffy Nose And Dizziness Returned Years After Having Septoplasty?

Hi, For the last 5 weeks I have had sinus pressure in my face, cheeks, etc. I used to get chronic sinus infections before having a Septoplasty about 3 years ago. Since then, I ve had no issues until now. I haven t had a cold, but did have an allergy attack a couple weeks prior to these sinus issues. In addition to sinusitis symptoms (minus a stuffy/runny nose) I have been feeling dizzy. Not vertigo or lightheadedness necessarily...but more of a woozy, slightly dizzy, almost drunk feeling. I have been doing all the sinusitis tricks that I used to do before my surgery such as hot showers, hot steam, humidifier at night, mucinex, drinking hot tea & using the neti pot. My sinus issues feel a little bit better but I still feel crackling in my face/cheeks (randomly and when I turn my head from side to side) and my ears constantly pop. Most concerning though is the dizzy feeling. It hasn t subsided at all. This feeling is not anything I have ever experienced in all my past years with sinus issues. It s really starting to panic me. I have an appt to see my ENT Dr. Who performed my surgery a couple years ago but I don t know if I can make it until then. Could this be something more serious? Thank you for your time

Hello dear,

After going through your history, I believe you have some genuine concern and I will try to help you out of this situation.

Our nose is surrounded by sinuses. Sinuses are empty cave like spaces in the facial bones with their mouth opening into the nose. These opening are very small and lined by epithelium same as that of nose. In a normal situation when we breathe, air enters the sinuses and ventilate them. Also there is constant production of fluids inside the sinuses, which drain out through the small opening to the nose.

When nose is affected with some infection, even common cold or in allergy, the epithelium swells and so the epithelium around the mouth of the sinuses. Now the sinuses cannot be ventilated nor can be drained. This leads to deposition of fluid inside the sinuses and SINUSITIS. Any anatomical defect like DNS (Deviated nasal septum). Hypertrophied turbinates ( Caused by allergy and infection) and other abnormalities only add to the risk of development of sinusitis.

In your situation, although you have done septoplasty 3 years back, still there is possibility of other factors for development of sinusitis. The most common factor in you should be the allergy, which itself and also by affecting the turbinates might be leading to your suffering.

In my clinic in cases like you I do a proper nasal endoscopy to find out any anatomical abnormality. If it is normal, I prescribe Antibiotics, steroid, nasal drops for some time and if it does not subside, then I advise them to go for a CT scan PNS ( Para nasal sinuses) to see any hidden pathology inside the nose and sinuses and manage according to the report. While dealing with allergy, I do a skin prick test and as per the repost I advise my clients Immunotherapy which is 90% effective in treating the allergy.

I hope I could solve your query. Please do not hesitate to clarify more doubts for the same situation.

Thank you for the way you are in my life.
