Why Is Cortisone Cream Prescribed Instead Of Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream?

I have been using Triamcinoclone Acetonide Cream USP 0.1% on my face ... as I am highly allergic to things such as smells (fragrances, dirty people, some outdoor trees, etc.) and it has been working very well. I only use it once a day 3x per week. Why on earth would my doctor take me off of using this, when it has been working great as a barrier cream .. so to speak .. where I do not turn red or swell .. people have truly noticed the difference. NOW, he has decided he wants me to use HYDRO CORTISONE CREAM .. which I think would have a harsher impact on my face and more side effects. Your input is greatly appreciated, as I am very perplexed why he would change me doing the Triamcinoclone from once three days a week ... to hydro cortisone cream. Any ideas?? Sorry .. I am on a very limited income and guess that I will just deal with a new change that bothers me ... as things have been going so well ... don t understand the need to change the medicine ... oh well. Thanks anyway!!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Triamcinolone Acetonide is a moderately potent steroid and it cannot be used regularly over long term because it may cause side effects like skin atrophy, acne, striae, etc. some of which are irreversible. This is perhaps the reason your doctor asked you to discontinue Triamcinolone Acetonide because he doesn't want you to get these side effects. Cortisone on the other hands is a very mild steroid and is therefore less likely to cause cutaneous side effects like I mentioned above.

Regards.
