Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Why Is Lipitor Prescribed While The Cholesterol Levels Are Under Control?
My 77-yr-old husband had a mild stroke (clot in artery in right side of brain; NOT a TIA) on January 20. He has low cholesterol with HDL and LDL in normal ranges as well as blood pressure controlled to 124/74. As is apparently standard procedure, he was prescribed Plavix and Lipitor. Why Lipitor when he has good cholesterol numbers and info on Lipitor says: Do not take Lipitor if you have A HISTORY OF STROKE.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
There is no need to take but stroke may be due to atherosclerosis which may be formed by cholesterol induced inflammation lead to phagocytosis and atheroma which lead to rupture.
So to stabilize it they might have advised it.
Aggressive Reduction in Cholesterol Levels (SPARCL) trial, compared with placebo, the patients with a recent stroke or transient ischemic attack without coronary heart disease randomized to Atorvastatin had a significant 16% relative risk reduction of stroke, and a 35% reduction in the risk of major coronary events.
So still many studies available that statins are useful in reduction of stroke risk.
Still have queries please feel free to ask.
Take care.
