Why Is Metrogyl And Ranitidine Prescribed For Stage 3 Esophagus Cancer?

Hi doctor my father in law has been diagnosed with stage 3 esophagus cancer two weeks ago . Now doctor suggested to start chemo on Friday on that day he had a blood test done but we don t know the result of the blood test .Now is issue is doctor said we will start the treatment next Friday on Monday take bone marrow test and on Tue take biopsy and come to the clinic on Friday .. and also doctor has suggested medication they are : Metrogyl 500 -3times a day for 5 days. Ranitidine - 2 times a day for 5 days. Cifran 500 - 2 times a day for 5 days . I need to ask why is this medication prescribe and also the test suggested is there anything we should worry about doctor . Pls suggest me ...

Hello,

Well, dear, there is nothing above cancer to worry about, the medication prescribed is antibiotics and anti-acids.

Since chemo itself makes patients weak and prone to smallest infections and gastric upsets; so that is one of the reasons for the prescribed medication,

Bone marrow test has to be done to check if blood production is normal before chemo because it affects bone marrow function too.
