Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been given in estrogen lotion apparently for dryness. Since I am 74, I assumed that was normal. Along with that my doctor gave me Osphena. Both of these have the potential of causing cancer and not discussed! Osphena usually is for paintful interourse which I don t have so don t see why she gave me Osphena. Would the lotion been because she feel I am too dry? It is expensive.
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Osphena is composed of 'ospemifene', which is a non-estrogen medication. It is not a pain medication but is used to relieve pain during sexual intercourse in menopausal women. It reverses certain changes in vaginal tissue that are caused by menopause. Hence, it tries to restore the functions of vagina near normal by keeping the tissue healthy. Therefore, it is given along with estrogen, which would primarily prevent vaginal mucosal dryness. Kindly use both the medications as prescribed by your doctor and do the necessary follow-up. Hope the information provided helps. Wish you good health. Regards, Dr.Ashakiran.S., MBBS., MD.
