Why Is A Person Considered Pre Diabetic While Having Low HBA1C?

Recently, my GP claims that I am pre-diabetic, but my results for HbA1c test don t seem to indicate it. My HbA1c results for the past few years are as follows: June 2010 = 5.5; July 2011 = 5.4, Glucose fast = 5.2; Aug 2012 = 5.1, Glucose fast = 5.0; not tested 2013-2015; Feb 2016 = 5.2. Glucose fast = 6.6. Is my GP correct? Or did he read the values incorrectly?

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
HbA1c or glycated haemoglobin results of below 5.5 % is considered normal. Hence your all results of Hb1ac are normal. However fasting glucose level of 6.6 recorded on feb 2016 is slightly high & considered as pre-diabetic.
Hence, You are at high risk of developing diabetes & your GP is correct in this regard. For improvement of blood glucose levels you could do following things.
1. Try to have lot of green vegetables & fruits. Fruits with high sugar content such as mango, grapes, etc are to be avoided.
2. Have lots of whole grains & other fibre rich foods. You could also include legumes like dried beans, peas, and lentils
3. Have light exercise like walking cycling for minimum half an hour daily.
4. Try to have divided meals instead of having heavy meal at a time

Consult your doctor for routine checkup

Refer to your physician
