Why Is An Isotope Breast Scan Done?

Hi, my mum has been diagnosed with non aggresive breast cancer stage 5 and she is going to have an isotop scan on monday and next day she will have an operation to remove the lump. Is she having this scan to check t he breast in more detail, or is it to check the rest of the body if it has spread? She is 84 years old.
