Why Is Bone Marrow Biopsy Recommended While Treating Pneumonia?
My daughter, 32 has HCV. Four weeks ago she was admitted to a hospital with double pneumonia an still there. Fever 103* off and on. Today a bone marrow biopsy was done. I CANNOT get a clear answer as to what is going on with her. I in VA and her in FL, phone calls only. Why a bone marrow? What are they looking for? I know you are not her doctor but is this common, first or end stage? I am raising her son, my grandson. In laymans term I need some answers PLEASE!
Hi & Welcome. I really appreciated your concern for your beloved daughter who is unfortunately suffering from HCV.
Bone marrowbiopsy is done to rule out certain blood cancers that may be associated with HCV and if found to treat them accordingly along with pneumonia.
Patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection develop a number of hematologic disorders, with benign and malignant B-cell proliferations (Lymphomas) being the most common.
They're also prone to developing peripheral cytopenias (like severe fall in neutrophils that could have resulted in infections like pneumonias) due the side effects of antiviral medications.
Hope the explanations given above have cleared your doubts. Wishing your daughter a speedy recovery.
Take care...
