Spotting or light bleeding after a Pap smear is not unusual due to the scratch on the delicate lining tissue of cervix caused by brushing or swab scratching. It may be present even without particular cause of infection, cancer or polyp etc., after pap smear. Besides this bleeding may be present due to increased vascularity of cervix or use of fertility drugs.
Pregnancy may be sometimes be an additional cause of bleeding due to increased blood supply of cervix in pregnancy. However, this bleeding usually stops completely within 1-2 days. Hence, taking a pregnancy test is the only definite method of ruling out / confirming the occurrence of pregnancy in such a condition.
