Why Is Recovery Slow With Decreasing ALT And Should Hepa-merz Syrup Be Continued?

I got Acute Viral Infection around 50 days back. It started with 104F temperature, after 5 days ALT escalated to 2700 and bilirubin to 10. After one week ALT dropped to 1400 and bilirubin raised to 22. After 2 further week ALT dropped to 342 and bilirubin to 10. It remained on this value for 3 weeks. Now ALT is at 92 and bilirubin at 1.9 since a week. Ultrasound was ok, and HBV, HCV were negative. I have three questions, 1. Why it is taking much time on lower values to go out of body? 2. I am taking Hepa-merz syrup, since last 2 weeks (before it took other tonics, silliver and LIV LIV capsule) should I continue it? 3. Any other recommended medicine ?

Hello,

Your elevated liver enzymes are taking long to come back to normal, it commonly happens in cases of prolonged elevations of the liver enzymes such as in NAFLD (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease) or hepatitis A infection. It becomes difficult to bring down the elevated level of ALT if the infection load is concentrated. However, in people who take their medications and stick to dietary advice recover faster.

It may take as long as 4-6 weeks' time for liver enzymes to come to normal. In the meantime, get clinically examined by a GP, get repeat blood tests and USG liver done to detect liver enlargement or any other pathology causing you symptoms so that you can receive the correct treatment or dosing. Take home made food. Prefer to take boiled food or food cooked in olive oil over fried, oily food.

Do not take food or fluids from outside to prevent intake of contaminated foods or drinks. Yes, you are to continue all the prescribed medicines and stay in strict diet control. Take well-cooked whole cereals and veggies, fruit, berries. Avoid taking refined flour, fatty food, full fat dairy products, red meat. You can only take lean meat.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
