Why Is The Left Side Swollen And Painful Post Spleen Removal?

My husband had his spleen removed about 5 years ago. His left side after the surgury remains swellen. Last night while sleeping woke up with extreme pain on his left side and it appeared to be more swllen then usual. It seems like he has a muscular knot. What can it be? What can be done?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query, read your history and understood your problems.

Any swelling after a particular intra-abdominal surgery is due to incisional hernia or intestinal obstruction unless proved otherwise.

I would suggest you to undergo the tests of contrast enhanced CT scan of the abdomen and barium studies to get the correct diagnosis as this will decided which surgery will be required for him.
