Why Is Transfusion Of Blood Delayed For A Person With Low Platelet Count?

My mother aged about 64 is suffering from Dengue. Her platelet count has fluctuated between 1.2 Lac day before yesterday to 1.5 Lac as of yesterday. She seems to be stable and slightly improved, however this morning the platelets have dropped to 1 Lac! She has not been given any transfusion. Can a doctor be kind enough to explain the reason for this. Thanks in advance

Hi.Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

Transfusion of blood is delayed in a person with low platelet count till it becomes a emergency situation. This is due to the fact that blood transfusion or transfusion of blood components contains considerable risk. The risk of following problems
1 Bloodborne infections- Blood banks test blood for infections to reduce transfusion-related infections. But it can take weeks or months after a infection is spread, to be positive in blood. During this time a infection can easily spread to blood receiving.
2 Iron overload- If you receive multiple blood transfusions, you may end up with too much iron in your blood.
3.Acute immune hemolytic reaction can occur which can be very serious
4 Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease is a very rare condition in which transfused white blood cells attack the recipient’s bone marrow. This disease is usually fatal

So taking a safe measure blood transfusion is delayed till it becomes absolutely necessary.

Hope this information helps
