Hi,I am Dr. Robert Galamaga (Hematologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a blood test for life insurance. Everything on the test came back good except my SGOT and SGPT. SGOT is 160 u/l and SGPT is 138 u/l. Tested negative for hep b and hep c. I'm 29 and in good physical conditon. Not over weight or obese. Don't drink more than once every other week. What could be the problem?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Elevated levels of liver enzymes SGOT and SGPT suggest damage to the liver cells or hepatocytes. Common causes of raised liver enzymes are viral infections, alcohol, drug toxicity, etc. Viral infections other than hepatitis B and hepatitis C can also cause damage to hepatocytes like Epstein Barr virus, Cytomegalovirus etc. A clinical assessment and other relevant investigations have to be done to know the cause of elevated SGOT and SGPT levels.
