Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been made aware of a muscle relaxant that is not listed anywhere but works well for me. This drug name is Soma. I m not sure I spelled it right but my previous Primary care doctor told me it was not prescribed anymore. If it works so well, why have they discontinued using it?
Soma is the brand name of a drug called Carisoprodol, which belongs to the group of drugs called skeletal muscle relaxants. Could you please elaborate on why you were taking Soma? Was it for back pain?
Muscle relaxants are no longer the first choice for musculoskeletal pain unless there is a contraindication to the use of NSAIDs. Soma is still available in the United States, and it is a controlled substance. It was withdrawn from EU markets because of concerns of abuse, dependence, and side effects, and there are other drugs available that have similar effects without these issues.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saralkumar R. Desai, General & Family Physician
